Democracy in action

The project aims to strengthen the competencies of teachers and adult educators so that they can effectively convey democratic values and civic engagement to young learners. The focus is on developing a comprehensive educational package that provides children with a deep understanding of democracy and promotes their active participation from an early age. These materials include a teacher's manual, a guide for adult educators, as well as illustrative teaching materials such as lesson plans, videos, and interactive games.

The pedagogical foundation of the project is based on two central approaches:

Janusz Korczak – The Polish educator advocated for the respectful treatment of children, valuing their opinions, and their co-determination in everyday school life (e.g., through children's parliaments). Philosophy for Children (P4C) – This concept is based on the Socratic dialogue. It promotes critical thinking, the ability to take on different perspectives, reflect on one's own thoughts, and exchange ideas respectfully.

The project pursues the following objectives:

  • Development of versatile, adaptable teaching materials for conveying democratic principles.
  • Qualification of teachers so that they can effectively integrate democratic values into everyday school life.
  • Promoting awareness and the active participation of children in democratic processes.
  • Long-term strengthening of fundamental democratic attitudes and an active civil society.

The initiative is in line with the priorities of the funding program: It supports adult education (ADU priority) through capacity building for teachers and at the same time promotes common values, civic engagement, and participation (horizontal priority) already in early education.
